Part of our American heritage

Prince William County is bordered by Loudoun County (north), Fairfax County (northeast), Fauquier County (west), Stafford County (south), and the Potomac River (east). When Captain John Smith began exploring the Potomac River, his party made a note of the village of Doeg, which translates to “plenty of fish.” The original village was located on the river approximately 30 miles south of the city of Alexandria.

By 1700, the Doeg abandoned their land due to colonization pressures. Prince William County was established in 1731, encompassing what today includes several surrounding counties.
